Our Name

Recognition of the members as being African students by blood and decent is of tremendous importance in that it ties them with their native land; it also reflects the cultural montage of the members which make up this organization and distinguishes them from other groups. Therefore, the name if its organization shall always reflect the ancestral embodiment of our native land, Africa.

Our Mission

African Students have on this day gathered to ratify this constitution, which will legitimize the social and political functions of this organization, now and hereafter identified as the Afrikan Student Union. In conjunction with the said constitution the ASU is to develop educational and political aspirations of its members and are charged with the four fundamental responsibilities, 1) Education: to perpetuate our ancestral heritage in our African Community; hold members accountable for maximizing their academic performance, and encourage the same performance of others. 2) Programming: to inspire, enlighten, unify and challenge the African Community (student and faculty) as well as the UCI academic community. 3) Support: to assist in the efforts of those organizations, which perpetuate like ideologies as of the Afrikan Student Union. 4) External Development (sponsorship): to be accountable through representation. This includes accountability by representing the organization in the Associated Students of the University of California Irvine, the academic and administrative elements of the UCI community, and all others deemed appropriate. It is therefore our finest belief that these responsibilities coupled with the guiding presence of this constitution shall have as its end result, the establishment of a well-organized structure of self-determined African students. As a collaborative body, our desire is to build, and further develop our community to its fullest capabilities that are aligned with the greatness of African traditions.
