Message-ID: <1356.69.25.227.217.1168377456.squirrel@webmail.uci.edu> Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incoporated, Lambda Sigma chapter presents: ?Pressing Towards the Mark? Scholarship Every winter quarter, the lovely and sophisticated ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, Lambda Sigma chapter host a Gospel Extravaganza. This year will be our 9th annual Gospel Extravaganza, and will be held on March 3 2007 in SSLH 100. This is a spirit filled event in which local talent, including choirs, musicians, singers, lyricist, rappers, and dancers come out to give praise to the most high through their respective God given talents. Not only does this program offer wonderful fellowship to those participating as well as those in attendance, it also is an opportunity for young women, and men within our community to earn a book scholarship! This scholarship is earned by writing the best essay reflecting the theme of the Gospel Extravaganza. This year?s theme is ?Pressing Towards? the Mark?. Philippians 3:13-14 says ? Forgetting the things that are behind and reaching out for the things that are ahead, with this goal in mind I press towards the mark of the upward calling of Jesus Christ.? Each and every individual at one point in their lives has set a goal for him or herself to obtain. Some times these goals are short term goals such as setting goals to finish your reading for the night. Others may be set on a larger scale such as setting a goal to become the best renowned heart surgeon in the nation. Whatever your goal(s) may be, whether it is a ?large? scale goal or a ?small? scale goal obstacles always seem to find their way into the paths that have been set before us. We all have the opportunity to either allow those obstacles to prevent us from achieving the ?marks? that we are ?pressing? towards, or to continue steadily ?pressing towards the mark.? We the Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated pride ourselves in being an organization that despite the many obstacles still stand till this day. In a brief essay, please describe how you ?press towards the mark(s)? that your have set for yourself, despite the obstacles that attempt to hinder you from you goal(s). Please feel free to incorporate hardships/personal experiences. Submit your essay along with a self-addressed stamped envelope (or your essay will not be considered) to: Essay Contest C/O AKA Sorority, Inc. P.O. Box 5534 Irvine Ca 92612 Contest Rules: ? Entries must be 3 to 5 pages in length. Submissions not meeting the minimum page requirement will be automatically disqualified. ? Entries must be typed, double-spaced, in twelve-point Times/Times New Roman font. ? On a separate sheet of paper, please include with your essay: your name, address, a telephone number where you can be reached, email, and the title of your essay. ? Entries are limited to ONE submission per person. ? Essays will be judged on originality, creativity, attention to overall theme, and the quality of writing contained in the submission. ? In the beginning of winter quarter, one winner will be selected to receive a $250 academic book scholarship. All entries must be postmarked by February 9, 2007 Good luck to all entries!!!!! GRIP provides a mentored research internships for master's and advanced doctoral students. In addition to work in the research laboratory, each student completes an independent project (e.g. a proposal, a publication, a literature review) as agreed upon by student and mentor. GRIP is funded by the National Science Foundation AGEP program, a partnership between the National ScienceFoundation and the University of California that works to increase the number of minority students earning doctorates in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Particular emphasis is placed on supporting groups that historically have been underrepresented in STEM disciplines: African Americans, Alaskan Natives, American Indians, Hispanic Americans and Native Pacific Islanders. *ARC* (The Academic Research Consortium) ARC is an eight-week summer research program for undergraduates just completing their junior year, and for CSU Pre-Doctoral Scholars in fields related to Social Science, Humanities, Science, Engineering, and Mathematics. ARC participants assist a UCSB Faculty member with graduate-level research projects, and participate in a variety of activities designed to develop skills necessary for success at the graduate level, from funding workshops and writing classes to GRE prep and career guidance. The goal of ARC is to prepare outstanding students for graduate study. Friends, Today is a historic day in America! We've been through a disheartening four years of war, a myriad of government scandals, and an economic down turn, but today there is new hope for to right our wayward ship. Today, Senator Barack Obama announced the creation of a presidential exploratory committee for the 2008 US Presidential Election. The Senator from Illinois brings a new style of politics to the national election scene with a representative message of togetherness, responsible leadership, social equality, fiscal control, and global morality. Don't just take my word it, watch for yourself these videos of him speaking of his candidacy and background: Obama Presidential Exploratory Statement Video http://link .brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid413287001/bclid416306087/bctid422873237 Obama Background Video: http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid416542522/bctid422561644 The objective of this committee is to truly measure the desire of the American People, to see if they are indeed interested in his candidacy for president. The campaign trail is a long road with thousands of stops along the way and fierce opposition. He faces not only democratic opponents in the primaries, but an eventual well financed republican candidate. The only true measure that we can give this courageous individual is our financial support. It doesn't have to be a lot, may $5 or $20, but every amount counts, especially the more people give and with consistent frequency. Contribute now to the Obama Exploratory Committee: https://secure.barackobama.com/ As a person who walks the walk, ! I want to let you know that I have all ready donated $100 toward his campaign and plan to continue donating on a monthly basis until he is elected. I believe that Senator Obama's education, global background, bi-partisan politics, and vision for America are all the assets that we've always needed and wanted in a 21st Century President. He's a person who appeals to voters across the political spectrum, from every state in our nation. I hope that you'll take a serious look at his candidacy and come to the same final analysis that I have, he should be our 44th President. Optimistically yours, Uduak Ntuk Independent & Obama Supporter Bakersfield, CA P.S. This weeks goal is to workout for 3 hours so you will meet with your team once on your assigned day and 2 hours will be working out on your own, but you must report every time you workout to your team leader so she can keep track of your points. When you first meet with your team leader she will give you a better explanation of how the whole fit club is going on and an explanation of how you can earn points. Here are the days and times to choose from to sign up for teams 1)Mondays after 7pm 2)Monday mornings 3)Tuesdays after 6pm 4)Wednesday evenings 5)Thursdays 5pm-7pm 6)Friday mornings These times are flexible and can be worked out according to your schedule so just let me know so we can sign you up with the best team that suits your schedule of working out. Please email me back asap letting me know what day you would like to choose from and I will email you back with your team leader and your team leader will contact you further. Its time to get healthy and in shape for 07!!! Thank You Lonneshia Webb Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Lambda Sigma Chpt, President Lwebb@uci.edu From swyattpa at uci.edu Thu Jan 18 02:06:56 2007 From: swyattpa at uci.edu (Sarahita Wyatt-Paige) Date: Thu Jan 18 02:06:57 2007 Subject: [Asu-list] IMPORTANT ASU RETREAT INFO. Message-ID: <1628.68.231.212.200.1169114816.squirrel@webmail.uci.edu> TO EVERYONE ATTENDING RETREAT: PLEASE READ ENTIRE E-MAIL A list of suggested supplies to bring with you this weekend for the retreat can be found in the attachment. Please read it carefully and pack accordingly...It will be COLD! Also, because of the high altitude, any bottled supplies that you may pack are susceptible to bust so you may want to pack them in a ziplock bag. FOR THOSE OF YOU LEAVING FRIDAY: Because retreat does not officially begin until Saturday morning, dinner will be on your own-meaning it will be your responsibility to pay for your own food on Friday. Don't be too concerned, though, there is a McDonald's, Burger King, Pizza place, and Thai restaurant all within walking distance of the hotel. Sorry if this creates an inconvenience for any of you. On Saturday you do not need to worry about food, we will be providing breakfast, lunch, and dinner. On Sunday the retreat will come to a close at about 9AM roughly. Afterward anyone who is interested in participating in snow activities such as snowboarding, skiing, inner tubing etc. can do so. Prices etc. can be found on the websites bigbearsnowplay.com and www.snow-valley.com Keep in mind, though, that all drivers are responsible for those in their cars so if you do plan on staying up in the mountains longer for snow activities, be sure to communicate and come up with some sort of arrangement with your driver or passengers. An additional note about packing: Please pack light. There is limited space in cars for all the passengers and all of the luggage. Also, though the hotel will be supplying blankets etc. you will be sharing a room with other people so if you feel the need to pack a sleeping bag please do so. If you do not feel comfortable sharing a bed with someone else you may also want to bring a sleeping bag. Last thing: Those leaving Friday don't forget to meet at the flagpoles by 2PM. Those leaving Saturday, unless you have previously spoken to the board about separate arrangements, meet at flagpoles by 7AM. See you soon! -- Sincerely, Sarahita Wyatt-Paige Afrikan Student Union, Director of Communications Associated Students of UCI, At Large Rep. swyattpa@uci.edu -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... What is Black Grad? It is a graduation ceremony specifically for the Black community that takes places in addition to the traditional UCI graduation ceremony. African American graduating seniors can invite friends and family members to watch them participate in this ceremony that is especially catered to them with slide shows, music, dances, etc. UCI is one of many campuses that has a Black Grad but in order to keep this tradition going we need at least 5-7 people to join the Black Grad committee and one person to chair the committee. We ask that no graduating seniors join the committee but we will be asking your input as the year progresses. Preferably we would like it if sophomores and juniors would join this committee. This will be a great experience in helping to plan an important campus event and a foreshadowing of what you can look forward to as you graduate and hopefully participate in the Black Grad ceremony. If you are interested please contact myself or any of the board members. Thanks. -- Sincerely, Sarahita Wyatt-Paige Afrikan Student Union, Director of Communications Associated Students of UCI, At Large Rep. swyattpa@uci.edu From swyattpa at uci.edu Tue Jan 23 18:24:20 2007 From: swyattpa at uci.edu (Sarahita Wyatt-Paige) Date: Tue Jan 23 18:24:23 2007 Subject: [Asu-list] Black Wednesday Message-ID: <63021.128.195.139.9.1169605460.squirrel@webmail.uci.edu> Hey Everyone, It's that time again...your favorite day of the week...BLACK WEDNESDAY!!! It would be great if you all could come out and support this event, especially since it directly ties into this year's ACQ theme "400 Years vs. 400 Days"-approximately 400 years since slavery and approximately 400 days since Hurricane Katrina.
