Wilderson, III, UCI Herman Bennett, Rutgers Winston James, UCI Bridget Cooks, UCI Jared Sexton, UCI The Dred Scott conference seeks to interrogate the cultural, historical, and political terms by which the U.S. Supreme Court in 1857, in what is considered its most controversial ruling, disposes of African American populations in the emerging U.S. National configuration so as to exclude African Americans juridically and therefore, definitively, from the civic term of the U.S. Federal Compact. The ruling, rendered by Chief Justice Roger B. Taney, presumes to resolve the escalating abolitionist and pro-slavery tensions that by the 1850s take on not simply discursive formations but, increasingly, militarized formations in the United States and its (un)organized territories. The court ruling aims to formalize the excision of African American populations from the civil rights imagination of national coherence. The conference proceedings are divided into three panels: "Human Being: Legality and Citizenship," "Dred Scott and Hemispheric Blackness," and "The Intimacies of the Dred Scott Case." The conference will conclude with a keynote address by distinguished legal scholar Cheryl Harris (UCLA, Law). Please see the attached flyer for the conference schedule. We hope to see you there! I am currently a senior at UC Berkeley and I work with the Greenlining Institute, a multi-ethnic non-profit public policy and advocacy organization in the city of Berkeley. I need your help, just a few minutes of your time. The Greenlining Institute has been working with students across the state to make college more affordable. Almost every student I know mentions two major issues affecting college affordability: 1) The outrageous prices of textbooks (ever wonder why there are all those revisions and needless new editions and bundled CDs and workbooks?) 2) The predatory lending of credit card companies on college campuses (ever get free pizza or a T-shirt in exchange for signing up for high-interest credit cards that leave you in big debt?) The Greenlining Institute now has two bills on these issues in the state legislature. Assemblymember Jose Solorio has introduced the Transparency in College Textbook Publishing Practices Act (AB 1548). Assemblymember Joe Coto has introduced the College Student Credit Protection Act (AB 262). We would really benefit from a letter of your organization's support (one for each bill). I've already written the attached sample letters. You would simply need to print the letter on your own student organization's letterhead, sign it, and send it to the respective legislators. You could mail or fax them. Of course, feel free to change or rewrite the letters if you'd prefer. I hope you can help. We think this will really impact the costs and debts that students face. Please let me know whether you are able to send these letters. Regards, Alberto A.
