Hey guys,
Here is a great opportunity for those of you who want to volunteer in a
clinic like setting. If you're interested, fill out the applications ASAP
because they're due on Saturday (Nov. 3rd). See message below for more
info.
Yetunde Fatunde
The concept for a UCI Student-Run Free Clinic was first proposed in 2006
by a dedicated group of medical students as a way to expand the services
available to the medically underserved community in Santa Ana. UCI medical
students in collaboration with the School of Nursing and UCI student
volunteers are creating a full-service primary care clinic where these
patients can receive continuity of care provided a student-run free
clinic. Eventually, our hope is that we will be able to provide patients
with dentistry, vision care, legal services, and mental health counseling
to work hand-in-hand to start to close the gap in health care access in
the Santa Ana community.
We are now accepting applications for student volunteers, so please tell
the members of your chapter that the application can be found online at
www.ucifreeclinic.org
and then sent to uci.free.clinic@gmail.com as soon as possible, we are
currently interviewing. If you need more time please email back and let
us know. Also, please confirm that you received this email and are
distributing it to your members. Thank you!!
Thank you very much,

Message-ID: <49503.72.211.208.113.1194305893.squirrel@webmail.uci.edu>
Hello everyone,
I hope you are all doing fine and that your midterms were good. The next
MAPS meeting is about HPV awareness. I am sure that a lot of you have
seen the
commercials on TV telling you to get the vaccine, but how do they expect
you to get a vaccine for something you know nothing about? Well, thats
what we're here for. MAPS will be having a member of the health education
center come and tell us if and when we should get these HPV vaccine. To
show you how serious HPV is, here are some statistics on it:
-20 million people are currently infected with HPV
-HPV is most common in young people who are in their late teens & early
20's (that is, us college student!)
-HPV is the most common sexually transmitted virus in the U.S
-Strands of HPV are known to cause cervical cancer
To learn more about HPV and the HPV vaccine, come out to the MAPS meeting
on Tuesday (November 6th) at 5:00pm in HH 118. This is one MAPS meeting
you dont want to miss. Hope to see you there.

Hello Family,
The time is approaching once again for Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority,
Incorporated, Lambda Sigma Chapter's Annual Sanctuary! It will take place
on Thursday, November 29th at 7pm. For those of you who are new or have
yet to hear about Sanctuary it is a night in which we showcase eclectic
arts such as spoken word, music and singing. It is modeled off of the
movie Love Jones, and set in a poetic, neo-soul like environment. Once
again we are looking to the community to showcase any talents they have in
this genre. So if you can sing, perform spoken word, or play a musical
instrument and would like to participate in this year's Sanctuary, please
send an email to ladeniyi@uci.edu no later than MONDAY NOVEMBER THE 12TH!
Please keep in mind that spaces fill up quickly! Thank you and I'm
looking forward to your responses!

Hey everyone,
As you may or may not already know, Rainbowfest is taking place this
Wednesday and Thursday on ring road from 11am-2pm. Rainbowfest is a
Cross Cultural Center event where cultural groups put together fun,
interactive, informative booths and we have a contest to see whose is
the best! ASU has won the past 2 years straight and we want to bring
home that 3peat! So, this is where you come in.
If you have any interest in helping at the ASU booth on either
Wednesday or Thursday (or both!) please email both Amy Blackmon and
Niccole Thompson at ablackmo@uci.edu and ndthopms@uci.edu,
respectively with your availability on those two days between 11 and
2.
To give you an idea of what you'll be volunteering for, Amy estimates
that we'll need two people working on a trivia game section, 1-2
people working the bakesale and 1 person working on an activity we're
calling "Define your Blackness"
Again, if you're interested at all, let Amy and Niccole know your
availability ASAP and we can be 3 time award-winning club 3 years
straight!
Much love

Tuesday 12:00 PM in the central quad at Cal Sate Fullerton, and Wednesday
at 9:36 PM at Cal Poly Pomona. This is something you definitely do not

Hello ASU,
This e-mail is to inform you of the racially motivated events that took
place on the campus of Cal State Fullerton last week. Last week five
orange nooses were hung on the clothesline project that was put up in
support for the "Rally Against Hate" at CSU-Fullerton in the QUAD. This
ignorant act took place anonymously the night before the rally. As I am
sure most of you have heard, there has been an influx of reposts of noose
hangings all across the country in the recent months. Why is this a
problem? Because the noose represents one thing: the murder of Black
bodies. Nooses historically (and in many instances today) were used to
murder Black men and women via lynching. The noose hangings that have
been manifesting themselves lately say that racism and Black hate and
disrespect are very much so still with us. Black people are just as much
Americans as any other ethnic group here in the U.S. and therefore it is
unacceptable for such incidents to continue to occur. That is why this
week Cal State Fullerton will be hosting events in protest of the noose
hanging on their campus. Please see the facebook group for more
information on the events.
http://uci.facebook.com/group.php?gid=19687723904
These racist events not only affect students at Cal State Fullerton, they
affect us all as Black Americans. Tomorrow students at CSU-Fullerton will
be wearing ORANGE in protest because the nooses that were hung were orange
(one of the school colors). For Black Wednesday tomorrow (which will be
at the tables at the Student Center) please wear orange to be in
solidarity and support of the CSU-Fullerton students. There is also a
silent protest at Fullerton from 11:30am-1pm and a discussion forum that
evening from 7pm-9pm. A secure carpool has not been established however
if anyone is interested in attending or helping in a carpool for the
discussion forum at 7pm please sign up at Black Wednesday or e-mail myself
by 3pm tomorrow swyattpa@uci.edu. Unfortunately ASU will not be able to
guarantee a carpool for the 11:30am protest but if you are interested in
attending here is the Fullerton address:
800 N. State College Blvd.
Fullerton, CA 92831-3599
Thanks and see you all tomorrow in ORANGE

I hope this email finds you at the beginning of a great weekend. I
wanted to give everyone an early heads up about Monday's meeting.
Most of our meetings thus far have been very serious and politically
based and, though these types of meetings are necessary, it's time for
a break! Monday we'll be meeting up at 5:00 and carpooling out to the
park to play flag football!
We'll also have food for everyone and prizes for the winning team. It
should be a great time so come ready and dressed to play!
Have a great weekend and we'll see you Monday!

Hey all,
Tomorrow is Black Wednesday so we'll be out at the Student Center
tables from 11:00am to 4:00pm.
Recently I've had a lot of emails asking what Black Wednesday is
exactly about so to shed light for all of you that may still be
unsure, Black Wednesday is a time for us to come togehter and wear our
A.S.U. shirts to let everyone know that there ARE black students on
this campus.
With that said, good evening and we'll see you tomorrow!

Subject: [Asu-list] Important The Sanctuary Date Change
Message-ID:
Hey Fam!!!
This is just a notice that the Sanctuary has been moved from this
Thursday, November 29, now to its new date, which is Thursday,
December 6, 2007. We are sorry for the inconvenience this may have
caused.
For those of you who are new or have yet to hear about the Sanctuary
it is a night in which we showcase eclectic arts such as spoken word,
music and singing. It is modeled off of the movie Love Jones, and
set in a poetic, neo-soul like environment.
We have an excellent program planned for you all with some great
acts! Take a quick break from studying and come out and get cozy at
the Sanctuary!
Once again the information is as followed:
Date of Event: Thursday,December 6, 2007
Time:Doors open at 6:45pm
Location: Campus Village, Atlantis Lounge
See you all there!!!

Hey Everyone,
I know that this is last minute, but tomorrow at the flagpoles there
will be a rally held by SNAPS (Students for Native American and
Pillipino Studies) from 12:00 to 1:00 addressing the absence of
departments for both Native Studies and Pillipino Studies on our
campus as well as the general lack of faculty of color that we employ
at UCI. If you're interested, this is a great opportunity to find out
more about what things can change for the better on our own campus so
come out, it promises to be a great rally!

Message-ID: <1b2726dc0711301523m71a02d65t34b6e96065869810@mail.gmail.com>
Good Afternoon,
As some of you know, ASU will be ordering sweatshirts for us to wear
next qarter (since the weather's starting to get colder). So, if you
want one of these exclusive joints you need to either find any board
member and give them an envelope with: $30, your name and your size.
OR you can leave the same envelope upstairs in the Cross Cultural
Center's offices in the ASU mailbox to insure the security of your
payment.
After finals week starts please ONLY TURN IN YOUR MONEY UPSTAIRS as
board members have tests to take too : )
The payment for the sweatshirts can be turned in no later than
Wednesday December, 12 at 3:00pm.
Again payment is DUE DEC 12 at 3:00pm.
Thanks,
P.S. if you want to order an XXL Sweatshirt it will be $2 extra.

Subject: [Asu-list] Peace Flag
Message-ID: <52428.128.195.100.232.1196489252.squirrel@webmail.uci.edu>
Hey Everyone,
If this interests you contact the person mentioned below.
"My name is Ameena Higgins and I am an Ambassador for the Campaign for
Conscience, a new club at UCI. Campaign for Conscience has been
established to promote peace and compassion on the UCI campus while
raising questions about local and global responsibility and ethical
leadership and action.
Our first undertaking is a creative intervention into the campus space of
Ring Road entitled, The Peace Flag Project.
In May 2008 Ring Road will be circled with several hundred 'Peace Flags'
whose aim is to raise awareness about the 40+ ongoing-armed conflicts in
our world. Conceptually modeled after Tibetan prayer flags, which
traditionally promote wisdom, peace, compassion, and strength, each Peace
Flag will be a large square of colored fabric with a statement providing
information about one of the many ongoing conflicts. Several flags will be
dedicated to each conflict, allowing for a short narrative to develop that
provides the context and circumstances of each individual conflict, plus
ways to help and get involved.
The Peace Flags will be made by various campus groups and clubs, another
facet of the project being to unite the UCI campus in a communal effort
for peace and compassion.
I am writing to invite the Afrikan Student Union to create a set of Peace
Flags for the Spring project. It is incredibly vital to the aims of the
project that the Peace Flags are made by THE UCI COMMUNITY. It is an
opportunity to acknowledge a common ideal of peace within the diversity of
our campus community, and promote the Afrikan Student Union?s role in it
as an actively tolerant and contributing member.
Our intention is to show the extent to which conflict pervades our world
and the extent to which peace is desperately needed. Because we do not
confront these conflicts on a daily basis in our normal lives as Orange
County students or in our popular media, it is easy and natural to ignore
that they are a constant reality for millions of people around the world.
To be uninformed is to be complicit, in that many of the things we buy,
use or support contribute indirectly to these problems. Perpetuating the
state and habit of ignorance does not contribute to a more positive world
for oneself or others.
By transforming our community thoroughfare of Ring Road into an encounter
with global issues, it is hoped that more and more individuals will be
inspired to recognize their place in humanity and to examine their role in
it. Ultimately, it is hoped that people will be aesthetically moved by the
Peace Flags to lead a more active and compassionate life.
Please visit our website www.campaignforconscience.com to see sample Peace
Flags and find more information about our project and club. As an
Ambassador for this project you can also contact me with any questions or
concerns you might have about being involved.
Your support and collaboration would mean a great deal to the resonance of
this project within the campus community. I hope you will consider
contributing to this effort of good will and compassion. Please get back
to me ASAP in order for the project to run as smoothly as possible.
All Good Things,
Ameena Higgins
