I hope this e-mail is finding you well. I wanted to let you all know about a conference that's coming up that has to do with all students of color. It's called the Student of Color Conference (SOCC) and it's taking place November 10t -12th at UCSC. Below is a blurb from the Facebook group that explains what exactly the SOCC is. This is a very exciting event and we are trying to get as many people to go as we can so if you are interested in attending this conference please contact me at jpayne@uci.edu. The SOCC Planning Committee has chosen the theme: In Solidarity and Struggle: The Fight for our Rights, to highlight the systematic and institutional oppressions that students of color and their communities face on a daily bases. The theme was created to directly discuss the abuse of human and civil rights that we face. Through educating and empowering students of color and their allies, we hope to give students the tools to organize and mobilize their communities around the institutionalized oppressions that students of color face. In an effort to create community consciousness and unity between our cultures, we will provide a safe space where race, gender, class, sexuality, nationality and different abilities will be actively discussed. We understand the oppressive realities that students are put into and this is why we have chosen to continue to defend and support the efforts of students across the state in their reinvention of social, academic and progressive communities within their campus communities. -- Sincerely, Jaymee Payne Third Year Criminology, Law & Society Major Afrikan Student Union Co-Chair 07/08 National Society of Black Engineers Secretary 07/08 From rcurry at uci.edu Wed Oct 10 00:11:26 2007 From: rcurry at uci.edu (Russell Curry) Date: Tue Oct 9 23:11:29 2007 Subject: [Asu-list] Black Wednesday Tomorrow Message-ID: <56160.68.4.2.156.1191996686.squirrel@webmail.uci.edu> Hey all, Just a reminder that we'll be doing Black Wednesday again like last week at the student center. On behalf of the organization we are inviting you to come out to our interest committee meeting. For those of you who do not know what ABC is, the ABC conference is an annual conference hosted by alternating UC campuses, allowing Black students from the other eight UC campuses to come together to network, dialogue about issues that are impacting their community on campus as well as off and decide upon ways to stand up and take action. Plus it is also comforting to be around more people that look like you in a university setting. This year UC Irvine will be hosting this great conference and is expecting an attendance of about six to seven hundred students, so this is going to be the biggest ABC conference yet. If you are interested in helping out in the planning at all and want to learn how, feel free to come to our information meeting to find out more. If you can't commit to the meeting on a bi-weekly basis, still feel free to come out and learn more because there will be plenty of opportunities to help out in the weeks prior to the conference. Come help make ABC 2008, the best One Yet!!!!!!!!!!!!
