Written and Performed by Tayo Aluko Accompanied by Michael Conliffe (Piano) Directed by Olusola Oyeleye Designed by Phil Newman Monday, April 7, 2008 8PM Humanities Hall Little Theatre UC Irvine THIS EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC Paul Robeson is a great and famous actor, singer and civil rights campaigner. When over the years he gets progressively too radical and outspoken for the establishment's liking, he is branded a traitor to his country, harassed, and denied opportunities to perform or travel. Just as physical, emotional and mental stress threatens to push him over the fine line between genius and madness, he is summoned to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee, to give the most difficult and important performance of his career. The play features some of his famous songs and speeches, and highlights how his radical activism caused him to be disowned and disremembered, even by the leaders and descendants of the civil rights movement. www.tayoalukoandfriends.com This production is co-sponsored by Student Affairs, the International Center for Writing and Translation, Department of Music, and Department of Drama. Message-ID: <1b2726dc0804131323s2e586504gc43852da9c6b34f1@mail.gmail.com> Hey fam, If you didn't already know, ASUCI elections are this entire week starting Monday and ending Friday. Now is the time where we all vote for new leaders in student government, both the legislative branch and executive. Umbrella Council (ASU, MEChA, Alyansa, AISA, APSA) is endorsing two candidates in this upcoming election; Megan Braun who is running for President and Oracio Sanchez who is running for VP of Academic Affairs. Umbrella Council came to a unanimous decision on both of these candidates because they felt that they had the best vision for the school including where students of color are concerned on our campus. Look at their facebook groups for more info. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=12140365078 http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=10899010813 Also endorsed by Umbrella is the POWER initiative, which, if passed, would establish a retention center on campus to provide resources for new students to ensure their academic success as well as secure funding for high shcool outreach programs (not unlike the one ASU is doing now) which is in danger of being completely cut next year. More information on the POWER initiative can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=9909502179 It is important to vote this week so that your interests are represented. Our Student Government has a lot more power and influence than many people realize and a portion of YOUR FEES each quarter goes toward it. Make sure you have a say in how your money's being spent! So, I guess what I'm trying to say is... For those of you who don't know Wayzegoose is like an Open House for all the clubs on campus to show prospective families what our campus is about. Volunteers would have a chance to bring some new black students to campus and show them what our black community is about here at UCI. Please respond to this email if you're interested in helping out. Last, we've been having issues with the cleanliness of the ASU office lately. Please, if you're going to use the space, respect it. ALL APPLICANTS please apply ASAP to this email with your name and what position you are running for! For those of you that are still interested in applying but haven't turned in an application they are due this SATURDAY to a board member. If you can't reach a board member, EMAIL THE APPLICATION back to me. For those of you who may be concerned with the 2.5 GPA minimum requirement, it has just been reduced to a 2.3 minimum pending a 2/3 majority vote by the members. This means that if you want to apply and have a 2.3 GPA, you still can, but you'll have to recieve more votes to get the position. That's it. Remember to email me if you're applying or if you're already running. As you may or may not know, the POWER initiative was endorsed by ASU as well as several other organizations. The purpose of POWER (Promoting Opportunities With Educational Retention) was to have a retention center on campus to help students stay in college with the goal of graduating and to provide student groups the resources necessary to outreach to high school students. Many are not aware that a large percentage of students who enroll at UCI drop out before their designated graduation date and unfortunately the amount of funding for students to outreach to high school students to promote a more diverse campus is depreciating exponentially. POWER would have helped to solve these issues by taking a quarterly fee of $7 from all undergraduates to help fund the retention center and the high school outreach. In the grand scheme of things it would be like taking the amount one would spend on a meal at Wendy?s or any other Student Center eating place and using it to bring more minorities on campus and helping all students to stay and thrive here at UCI. Unfortunately the campus as a whole did not see fit to pass this initiative and POWER did not pass. It is disappointing to say the least that a great initiative like POWER failed on this campus, however, all hope is not lost. It just means that as Black students and people who care about bringing more minorities into higher education we will have to work that much harder to make sure everyone has an opportunity to be successful. ASU has created the STOMP program (Students Tutoring and Outreaching to the Minority Population) which has been up and running for a few weeks now and this is one example of how we can volunteer our services and give back to the community. If you are interested in helping or learning more about STOMP feel free to contact myself or any other ASU board member. Thank you to all of you who supported and voted YES on POWER. Your vote truly meant a lot. Let us continue to work towards progress for Black students and people of color and stay encouraged. -- Sincerely, Sarahita Wyatt-Paige Psychology and Social Behavior- University of California, Irvine Co-Chair- Afrikan Student Union swyattpa@uci.edu http://spirit.dos.uci.edu/asu From rcace2k at gmail.com Tue Apr 29 23:50:54 2008 From: rcace2k at gmail.com (Russell Curry) Date: Tue Apr 29 22:51:01 2008 Subject: [Asu-list] Black Wednesday Tomorrow/ASU fundraiser Thursday!
