Message-ID: <17731.12.17.20.130.1200422951.squirrel@webmail.uci.edu> On January 15, 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC. It was at Howard that nine visionary women founded the organization with the first chapter being Alpha chapter. Only a few decades removed from slavery, the nine founders made service the core mission of the Sorority. That mission continues today. Today, January 15, 2008, is a historic day because along with 200,000 members we are celebrating our 100- year anniversary. It is a testament to the power, vision and commitment of our Founders that Alpha Kappa Alpha has endured and prospered through ten decades. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is America's first Greek-letter organization founded in 1908 by, and for, African-American college women. Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, it is one of the world's leading service organizations. The sorority's members have made a commitment "to serve all mankind" through a nucleus of more than 200,000 women in over 975 chapters in the United States, the Caribbean, Canada, Germany, Korea, Japan and on the continent of Africa. Inspired by the vision, Celebrating Our Past, Serving Our Community, Honoring Our Sisterhood, our members will honor this anniversary, celebrate our achievements and resolve to build on the legacy of our Founders by strengthening our commitment to service. Join as we celebrate our 100-year AKAversary at our event tonight, held in Vista Del Campo Mini Theater at 7pm. I hope you all can attend, and have a bless day! On Oct 2nd 2007 some of you may have heard that a young man by the name of Kevin Powell was shot and killed by the Santa Ana Police Department. They fired 20 shots at him in a matter of 4 seconds while he sat in a in mobile vehicle. His family, friends, attorney and church family have questioned the santa ana police department on numerous ocassions as to why the fatal event occured that afternoon. To this day they have yet to answer our questions. On Feb 2nd 2008 you will have the opportunity to join in with members of Christ Our Redeemer AME church, his family, his friends and members of the community as we silently march for justice in America for our people. The march will be modeled off of the freedom marches that took place in the 50's that were led by the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We will carry signs and silently march, sending a message to the community and marching along the streets in front of the same Police department that fatally shot and murdered our friend and church member. In resemblance of the Freedom Marches that took place during the civil rights era we ask that men where dark suits, white collared shirts and dark shiny shoes. Women please wear skirts and dresses modeled from the 50's and comfortable shoes. We always ask: "What can we do now?" Here is an opportunity to participate in a historical event. Day: Feb 2nd, 2008... this saturday Time: Meet at the flag poles at 8am if you need a ride... ( If anyone that is going that drives can assist with this let me know asap) or meet at Washington and Broadway by 8:45am in Santa Ana.
