Message-ID: <002b01c5ca47$76169f50$6400a8c0@gondor> Hey everyone, This is just a reminder that ASUCI fundraiser for Hurricane Katrina will be today in Aldrich park from 3-6pm. All proceeds will go to the Salvation Army. You can expect to hear stories from people who have gone out to the Gulf Coast to help, or even from some students who were evacuated from the region and are now living here. I will most likely be telling about my experiences out there sometime after 5 (because I have class) so feel free to come by and meet me or hear my stories if you haven't already. If you would like to help out at all, please click here: http://www.clubs.uci.edu/drc/4xFliers.doc to download a flier you can print and hand out at the event. Even if each of us just prints one or 2 pages to hand out, it would really help a lot (of course more than 2 pages would be cool too). Also, I know my little fliers kind of suck because I'm not the best flier maker (and its 12:30 at night). If any of you have some free time and would like to design your own, or design something cool that I can post for others, feel free!! We'll probably be having a collection of fliers on our website soon so everyone who wants to can print them out, cut them into 4s (all the libraries have paper cutters) and pass them out on Ring Road or to your friends. I hope to see you all there, and don't forget our meeting this coming Friday at 1:15 in the volunteer center. -Steve Meissner President Disaster Relief Club at UCI -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The volunteer center is attached to the back side of the Gateway study building near the Langston library (just go over the stairs towards the park and make a right into the corner). This message has been sent to all the people who have signed up to be on the list, and to the Disaster Relief Club mailing list (so most of you should be getting 2 copies if you want to participate). If your name is not on the list, either email me or show up to the meeting and sign up. For those of you who are signed up, here is a brief summary of what we are doing. The Disaster Relief Club and the Psychology Students Association will be working together to assist the counseling center on campus to provide some unofficial support for students from Louisiana displaced by the hurricane and currently staying at UCI. Basically, we are going to start by pairing students up with UCI students willing to meet and talk with these new visitors and help them where we can. Some are still adjusting to the pace of UCI, or are new to California, and some are still coping with the traumatic events they have recently faced. Because of this, many of the students we are trying to recruit must have at least a basic awareness that if someone needs more formal counseling, they should be referred to the counseling center. You do not need to be a psychology student, and in some cases, it would be better to have someone who is of the same major as these new students so you have something in common. However, psychology students are a good logical choice to help for some of the more complicated situations. The administration and the counseling center are very excited about our willingness to help, but have given us few specific directions about how they want us to proceed (since nothing like this has been done before). Though the counseling center has a more formal COACH program with training and actual counselors, our goal is to help out on a more informal basis and basically help them cope with some of the troubles they've been having if we can. For our meeting, try to think up some ideas about how we as a group would want to approach some of these students for our initial contact and what some goals are for us. For the most part, these people just need a friend, but if we can organize some fun events for them like throwing a party or taking them out to dinner as a group, I'm sure they'd like that too. I will bring all the information that I have, but lets try to have a brainstorming session and figure out what would be the best way to help. If you would like to go but cannot make the time, Please contact me in advance, and Ill see if we can either change the time or fill you in on how the meeting goes. Thanks, -Steve Meissner President Disaster Relief Club -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
