We will have our first General Meeting for the school year this Thursday, September 22nd (tomorrow) at 4:00 pm in the Social Science Lecture Hall (SSLH). You do not need to be a UCI student to join the club or come to a meeting so feel free to bring your friends and anyone who might be interested in joining. The SSLH is building 212 on the campus map [ http://today.uci.edu/pdf/UCI _05_Map.pdf ] At our meeting, we will be discussing the general role of our club, as well as some specific goals we would like to achieve related to hurricane Katrina relief. If you cannot make it to the meeting, you can also feel free to email or join our mailing list to find out about events and further ways that you can help. We hope to see you there! I have a few announcements for you today. > The Disaster Relief Club will be holding an Officer?s meeting on Friday, Oct 7th at 1:15pm in the Volunteer Center. Since we still have unfilled officer positions, anyone who would like to be an officer or would simply like to take an active role in our club, please feel free to come to the meeting and let us know what you would like to do! If you cannot make this meeting, email us at drc@uci.edu and we can make other arrangements to fill you in on what?s going on. > We have a website! Though much of it is still under development, our homepage, members section, and donations page has some information for you. Please check http://clubs.uci.edu/drc regularly as more pages open up. At this time, please do not help by reporting broken links (because many are intentionally left broken), however, if there are any recommendations on format or if there is information about community or campus events that we do not know about, please email them in and we will post it > Donations Database: In particular, one of our projects has been to create a database capable of coordinating locations in impacted regions in need of supplies with the many people throughout the nation looking to donate goods. Since many organizations do not accept donations, we will be working with specific local relief groups in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi who have specific needs as well as with our own volunteers who will be sent out on assignment. For a quick list of which items have been added to the database (or at least of which items are remaining), go to http://clubs.uci.edu/drc//db/needed_items.php Though there are not many users in the system yet, with your help we would like to use this system to help a lot of people. > ASUCI will be holding a Fundraiser to benefit Hurricane victims in Aldrich park on Thursday, Oct 6th. Please feel free to check it out. If you would like to help with the event, please email me and we can let you know what you can do. > There are at least 2 faculty and as many as 25 students who will be staying here at UCI from Tulane University, and other New Orleans schools on a guest pass from the school to help continue their research. If you would like to volunteer to be a Docent and help show our new neighbors around the city, again, send us an email at drc@uci.edu > Habitat for Humanity's Orange County affiliate will be building several "Homes in a Box" next week. Next week at the Auto Show at the Anaheim Convention Center, HfH is looking for Volunteers to help Staff the Habitat table for one shift Wednesday, October 5, through Sunday, October 9 from 7.30am to 3.30pm. There will be two shifts: 7.30am to 11.30am and 11.30am to 3.30pm and 2 people will be needed for each shift. Volunteers will accept donations to Hurricane Katrina relief and accept applications from new volunteers. Let us know if you are interested! That?s all for now. We hope to see many of you at our officer?s meeting next week, or at Aldrich park for the barbeque and fundraiser! -DRC team.
