Golden Key has no political affiliation, but it is important to Golden Key that we work with the campus to address fostering dialogue and understanding on relevant current event issues. As a member of the Student Alliance for Dialogue and Understanding, we would like to invite all of our members to attend the first event sponsored by the Alliance, The Daniel Pearl Dialogue for Muslim-Jewish Understanding featuring Professor Judea Pearl and Akbar Ahmed. The event will be held Monday, May 16th at 7:00 pm in Crystal Cove Auditorium. I have attached a flyer to this e-mail for more information. Professor Judea Pearl, President of the Daniel Pearl Foundation and co-editor of I am Jewish (2004) and Professor Akbar S. Ahmed, Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies at American University, author of Islam Under Siege (2003) and from Pakistan, were invited by the American Jewish Committee to lead a public dialogue in Pittsburgh about the divisions between Muslims and the West and between Jews and Muslims. They discussed issues ranging from foreign policy and global perceptions to truth, lies and deepest fears. The event made a profound impact on the community and was covered in the U.S., Arab and Pakistani press. This personal yet public dialogue continues in other cities across the nation and abroad. Akbar Ahmed is the Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies and a professor of international relations at American University in Washington, D.C. He is the former High Commissioner of Pakistan to Great Britain. He is a leading authority on contemporary Islam, and the author of numerous books including most recently Islam Under Siege: Living Dangerously in a Post-Honor World. Judea Pearl is the father of Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter who was kidnapped and murdered in Pakistan in 2002. After his son's death, he formed the Daniel Pearl Foundation http://www.danielpearl.org/ to foster a dialogue to address the causes of intolerance. Pearl is a professor of computer science and statistics at UCLA. Since 2003, Pearl and Ahmed have traveled across the U.S. and Great Britain holding dialogues to foster mutual understanding. Rusty Kennedy, Executive Director of the Orange County Human Relations Council will serve as moderator of the one-on-one dialogue. The program will be at 7 p.m. in the Crystal Cove Auditorium, Student Center. The event is free and open to the public. Obviously we had a gliche with the listserv today and that coupled with people's inability to follow directions created a situation that was very annoying for everyone. I assure you that I received all of the same e-mails that you did and I too was very frustrated when weeding through them. I have turned on moderation for everyone... so you will not receive e-mails from anyone but me anymore. My e-mails will come no more frequently than once a week. I truly apologize. I was in class all day, and did not have the opportunity to check my e-mail until this evening and at that point I saw what was happening. I also apologize for the few people that chose to use vulgar language as a solution. I was offended by those e-mails too and I am deeply sorry that you had to receive them. I wanted to be able to make the list open to all of our members as a tool for all of us, but since there are some people who cannot be courteous and polite... now we'll just moderate everyone. I hope that you choose to continue receiving our e-mails now that our listserv is fixed, as it is the best way that I have to convey important information to all of you.
