The Kinship Center is a non-profit agency dedicated to foster care and adoptions support. It is seeking exceptional student tutors for the coming quarters to work with its children and their new families one-on-one. The Kinship Center serves children who are late-adopted or currently placed in foster or relative care. These children may have been abandoned, neglected, and abused. They have often spent considerable time in the foster care system, being moved from family to family, and suffering disruptions in their personal and social lives that have left gaps in their school progress. As their tutors you can help turn that situation around for them with weekly one-on-one meetings focused on their individual needs. In this way, YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIFE OF A CHILD. The UCI Department of Education and the Kinship Center have been working together since February, 2004, to provide qualified tutors ready to meet these children's needs. Tutoring, you can earn 2-4 units of Independent Study credit from Dr. Suzanne Charlton, of the Department, who works closely with Blaze Newman, the Educational Consultant for the Kinship Center. Together with Deborah Silverstein, Kinship's Associate Director, they provide you with a special training session, tutoring manual, and weekly support through feedback on field reports you submit after each visit. There are also support personnel including psychologists and family guidance counselors available at Kinship to help you, the children, and their families. This collaboration has worked so well that almost all UCI students involved have continued to serve their children at Kinship beyond the quarter they enrolled in Advanced Tutoring/Independent Studies with Dr. Charlton. But working at Kinship isn't for everybody. For this project you must be responsible, creative, caring, flexible and patient - then you'll find the experience as rewarding as former volunteers have. There is no doubt about your effect on the lives and futures of these children and their adoptive families, YOU DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIFE OF A CHILD. If you'd like more information on this project, contact Dr. Charlton or visit the Kinship Center website at www.kinshipcenter.org or the Southern California offices at 1504 Brookhollow Drive, Santa Ana. (Call first, 714-979-2365.) You may also contact Rebecca Kieffer at rkieffer@kinshipcenter.org. If you'll be able to take advantage of this opportunity in the Winter Quarter, please email me. You need to move right away, to get fingerprinted (which takes several weeks) and to plan for the prerequisite training, Friday, January 6, 2006 from 3:30-7:30pm and Saturday, January 7, 2006, from 9am-4pm You will be reimbursed for any fingerprinting costs. Here are four possible places you can go to get fingerprinted, although most police departments offer this service, too. By appointment only, contact the Orange County Dept. of Education, 200 Kalmus Dr., Costa Mesa, 714/966-4306 Fullerton Police Dept., 237 W.
