Volunteering &
Work Experience

When calling to inquire about volunteer opportunities, remember to address yourself as a college student who is on the pre-vet track. This will let the organization know that you are dedicated to animals and their well-being, rather than simply wanting to work with cute animals. Try to get as much animal experience, and in as many different areas, as you can. Volunteering, internships, and paid jobs are all acceptable forms of animal experience. Schools require anywhere from 180 to 1000 hours of animal experience, depending on the school. The minimum (and average accepted) number of hours required are listed on each school’s website. If you're looking for a paid job with animals, try contacting your local animal hospital.
